A police officer from the Special Crime Unit stationed at Sophiatown in Johannesburg was caught this week beating Douglas Cassell, the owner of Mario’s Pick n Pay in Reiger Park, Boksburg.
On Tuesday night, the sheriff decided to take justice into his own hand, beating Cassel to pulp after he was denied access to images from CCTV cameras at the point of sale.
The problems began after the police officer’s three-year-old son disappeared on Friday, only to be found in the safe after a staff member found him wandering unaccompanied in the store.
City Press has seen footage of the incident in which the officer approached Cassell and began beating him in full view of other police officers.

Elvina Koopman, Cassell’s wife who runs the popular store, said the boy was found wandering around the store. “One of our staff noticed the boy walking through the store. We asked clients if the child was with them, but unfortunately no one knew the child.
“We posted on the community Facebook page about the child, but no one responded. However, a client stated that he knew the boy’s family. We informed the child’s grandfather that he was safe. The boy’s parents saw the images on Sunday, ”Koopman said.
Michaela le Roux, spokeswoman for the police family, said: “The boy disappeared at noon on Friday while his father [a cop] he was busy washing cars. After realizing that the child was missing, the community conducted a search.
“The father went to the store and asked to see the images, but the owner of the store refused. He went to the police, but his colleagues didn’t help him, ”Le Roux said.

“We are disappointed that Douglas released the images of his assault, but did not provide the other images requested by the boy’s father. I don’t approve of what he did, but as a parent he went there looking for answers. I was stressed and I feel like we have to give it to the police [space] to do your job on this matter. “
The policeman will appear before the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with assault.
The provincial police spokeswoman, Captain Mavela Masondo, said: “The SA Police Service does not comment on the case since the matter is now in the Independent Police Investigations Directorate (Ipid). All inquiries should be directed to Ipid. “
Ipid spokeswoman Ndileka Cola did not respond to calls for comment.
