The Metro has made the decision after the team’s loss to Orlando City over the weekend
Bafana Bafana legend Bradley Carnell has been relieved of his duties as acting manager of the New York Red Bulls.
This comes after the Major League Soccer (MLS) team announced the appointment of Gerhard Struber as the club’s new coach on Tuesday.
Carnell had served as the club’s interim manager after Metro fired Chris Armas earlier last month.
Red Bulls sporting director Kevin Thelwell explained why Struber has been hired to take over the team after he left Barnsley from the English Championship.
“Gerhard is a brilliant coach and we are very happy to welcome him to the club,” Thelwell told the club’s official website.
“Gerhard’s style of play and experience in youth development align with our philosophy and, above all, as a person, fit our culture.
“We hope he gets here and we work together to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves as a club.”
Carnell took over six MLS games as Metro posted three wins and three losses, putting the team seventh in the Eastern Conference standings.
The former Kaizer Chiefs left back watched the Red Bulls succumb to a 3-1 loss to Orlando City in their most recent game on Saturday.
“We are very pleased with the process over the last month and we are proud that our league’s policies are in line with ours when it comes to recruiting diversity,” he continued.
“We met and spent time with several great candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
“The quality of the pool of candidates further solidified our confidence in Gerhard as one of the best options to lead our team.”
Thelwell continued to thank Carnell for leading the team well as Metro looks to qualify for the MLS playoffs this season.
“I would also like to congratulate Bradley Carnell and the rest of the coaching staff for their leadership over the past month as we continue to work to secure a place in the playoffs this season,” he concluded.
Red Bulls did not indicate whether Carnell will return to his previous role as the club’s assistant manager.
He served as an assistant coach on the Free State Stars and the Orlando Pirates before moving to the Metro in March 2017.
