Paramedics saved a premature baby after his mother suddenly collapsed and gave birth on her employer’s driveway in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, paramedics received a call at 8:27 a.m. from a distressed landlord on Danville Avenue, Durban North, who reported that his maid had collapsed in his driveway and was in the process of giving birth.

“Paramedics rushed to the scene, and while they were on the way, they received an update that the baby had been delivered, but was showing no signs of life,” Herbst said.

A staff member from a nearby school who was qualified in first aid rushed to help and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“Upon arrival, paramedics found the newborn lying on the ground with the placenta still attached, without responding and gasping for air.

“A team of Netcare 911 emergency care professionals initiated a full advanced life support resuscitation that struggled to fully revive the 24-week preterm baby.”

Herbst said the mother had been evaluated and treated at the scene and found her in stable condition.

After a concerted effort, the baby had begun to show signs of improvement and the child and mother were ready for transfer to the hospital.

During the trip, the child’s physical appearance and vital signs had improved to an acceptable level and both mother and baby were safely handed over to hospital staff.

“This highlights once again the importance of learning to perform effective CPR, as without this knowledge that the school staff member had, the outcome would likely have been different,” Herbst said.
