A woman has been rescued after she reportedly fell off a jetty at Strand Pavilion in Cape Town.

According to National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gordons Bay Station Commander Alan Meiklejohn, the crew received a report of an ongoing drowning around 12:45 on Friday.

Upon reaching the scene, they found a fully clothed woman being washed out to sea in rip currents at Die Poort.

It may have fallen into the water from the Strand Pavilion jetty, Meiklejohn said.

“An NSRI rescue swimmer jumped into the water from the canopy and caught up with the female, who was floating on her back, and the rescue swimmer held her down when the rescue craft reached the scene.”

The woman, believed to be a local, was brought safely to shore and treated for hypothermia by paramedics at the scene.

She was then taken to the hospital in stable condition.

On the same day, the NSRI assisted a man in distress when he swam behind the roof of his day cruiser.

The roof had reportedly been blown off while at Knysna Lagoon.

Jerome Simonis, NSRI Knysna station commander, said the crew was activated after eyewitness reports of an unidentified object afloat in Knysna Lagoon, drifting towards The Knysna Heads, around 5 p.m. on Friday.

“Upon arriving at the scene, we found a local man who had swam up to what was identified as the roof of his Day Cruiser Boat. The man was taken aboard our rescue jet-rib at sea and a cable was laid towing to prevent the roof from spilling any further, “Simonis said.

The roof was towed to shore, where it was beached and secured at the marine rescue station.
