Cape Town Gunmen Hunt Launched After Five Shots Killed In Joe Slovo

Police in Milnerton, Cape Town, launched a manhunt of six gunmen who shot and killed five people in two houses.

According to the police spokesman, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, the six armed men first approached a house on Sekowa Street.

“According to reports from the two scenes, the six suspects arrived at a home on Sekowa Street, Joe Slovo, after 10pm, looking for an individual identified only by name,” Potelwa said.

Two women were shot in the head. One died and the other survived.

The armed men then went to another house on Dada Street where they allegedly shot and killed four other people: three men and one woman, aged 28 to 36.

“Detectives are working hard in an effort to arrest the suspects and determine the motive for the murders,” Potelwa said.

Wave of shootings

In the past two weeks, there have been around five shooting incidents in the city.

In Nyanga, on September 25, four family members were shot dead in their home, allegedly by armed men who broke into the home. Three women and an 11-year-old boy died. A fifth member of the family was injured.

Five days later, six people were killed when armed men allegedly opened fire on a house on Solomon Tshuku Street, Khayelitsha. Four other people were injured in the shooting.

This week, seven people, including two children, were injured during a shooting in Hanover Park. A 28-year-old man was killed in the incident, which took place at the Galilee Court on Monday.

On Tuesday, one person was killed and another injured during a shooting in Brackenfell, at the corner of Frans Conradie and Kenwill units. Two people were arrested.

On Wednesday, Tyrone Philander, brother of former Proteas cricketer Vernon Philander, was shot and killed while reportedly going to fetch water from a community tap in Ravensmead.
