Two teenagers and a man drowned in separate incidents in Cape Town this week.
The man’s body was recovered on a beach, while two other drowning incidents were reported on different beaches on Friday.
According to the National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI), the man’s body was found around 11:00 on Friday on Mnandi beach. The body has been confirmed as that of a man who disappeared while swimming on the beach last Sunday.
“The body has been placed in the care of the police and the Western Cape Government’s Forensic Health Pathology Services. The police have opened an investigation file,” said Craig Lambinon, spokesman for NSRI.
Teen boy missing in surf
Later that afternoon, at 5:29 pm on Monwabisi Beach, a local family alerted law enforcement officers on the beach that their 14-year-old son was having a hard time surfing. Emergency personnel and an NSRI team responded, but the teenager could not be found.

“Despite an extensive search of the sea and shoreline, which included search efforts for diving without sweep lines by five rescue swimmers from NSRI … no sign of the adolescent was found. Police Diving assisted by the Cape Town Police and NSRI Strandfontein will continue the ongoing search efforts, “Lambinon said.
Shortly thereafter, around 5:59 p.m., another drowning was reported at Lagoon Beach, Milnerton.
Dangerous rip currents
A 13-year-old boy had been rescued from the waves by a passerby who had begun cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Emergency personnel responded and administered extensive advanced life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but the teenager was pronounced dead.
An investigation file has been opened.
“The two drowning incidents … occurred during an outgoing tide and it appears that in both cases the teens were caught in strong rip currents,” Lambinon said.
“The spring tide of the new moon peaks on Saturday and the higher-than-normal high tide and the lower-than-normal low tide will last until next week. Rip currents are the greatest danger and occur constantly. throughout the month and bathers should be careful when swimming on the beaches. “
