Cameroonian club PWD Bamenda has written to the African Football Confederation (Caf) asking for Friday’s Champions League preliminary tie against Kaizer Chiefs to be postponed.
The bosses were to host the match at the FNB stadium, but it emerged on Thursday afternoon that the Cameroonians have not yet arrived in South Africa just over 24 hours before kickoff.
Interestingly, the Chiefs returned to the country Tuesday after beating Bamenda courtesy of a single goal from defender Eric Mathoho in Sunday’s first leg.
The Gavin Hunt charges spent the rest of the week preparing for what they thought would be a Friday night game until the South African Football Association informed them, through Competition Officer and General Manager Mlungisi Ncame, about the Bamenda’s request for postponement.
Ncame said that all media inquiries regarding Bamenda’s application and whether the match will continue on Friday should be directed to the Chiefs as hosts.
“It’s the Chiefs’ home game and it’s the Chiefs who should take care of everyone [media] inquiries about that Bamenda request, ”said Ncame.
Amakhosi communications manager Vina Maphosa said they responded to Caf and told the continental body that chiefs can only play the game on Saturday, December 5.
If Caf accepts the Chiefs’ terms, the game will be played in the same location on Saturday with a kickoff at 6:00 pm Bamenda apparently wanted to play the game on Sunday, exactly seven days after the first leg.
Maphosa told TimesLIVE on Thursday that they are now waiting for Caf to communicate whether they agree with his proposal to move the game to Saturday.
The winner of the Chiefs / Bamenda game will meet Primeira de Agosto from Angola in the first leg scheduled for the end of December.
