JOHANNESBURG – On Thursday, the cabinet welcomed the high-profile arrests related to corruption, fraud and money laundering that have been made by the Hawks in recent weeks.

In a post-Cabinet briefing following their meeting on Wednesday, Presidential Minister Jackson Mthembu told reporters that this would support the government’s efforts to recover public funds from people involved in nefarious activities.

The Hawks arrested high-profile businessmen with political connections for fraud in the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mthembu said that the public must also rise to the occasion and report corruption and other criminal acts.

“The recent arrests are a testament that no one is above the law and demonstrate the government’s commitment to holding those who continue to break the law to account by robbing poor South Africans of much-needed government assistance,” he said.
