East London: The town of Butterworth in the Eastern Cape and surrounding areas in the local municipality of Mnquma will run out of water next week and residents will have to rely on an intermittent water supply brought in by tanker trucks until the situation improves, the Amathole District Municipality (ADM) said on Saturday.
“Mnquma LM’s Butterworth and surrounding areas will be completely without water during the week ending September 18, 2020,” ADM spokesperson Noni Madikizela-Vuso said in a statement.
“When this eventuality occurs, tanker trucks will be used to transport water to affected communities. It is noteworthy to note that transporting water has its own challenges that result in intermittent water supply,” Madikizela-Vuso said.
Among the problems were limited trips to fill the tanker trucks due to the distance between the water source at Kei Bridge and the communities that needed water, constant truck repairs due to poor roads in the area, and insufficient numbers of tanker trucks due to limited funds. .
The long-awaited completion of the Teko Kona project at the end of September would also bring some relief, “albeit marginally.”
The project involves the drilling of wells in the Teko Kona area and its equipment to channel water to Butterworth.
ADM was investigating the purchase of additional tanker trucks, “using the regional subsidy for bulk infrastructure.” In addition, the human settlements, water and sanitation department, through Amatola Water, would assist with trucking water.
The ADM continued to plead with communities to use water sparingly, Madikizela-Vuso said.
