Durban – After several allegations that tensions exist within the Zulu royal house between Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi and the princes over how the burial of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini should be carried out, the secret has finally been revealed.

The royal secrets were brought to light by Buthelezi, the late King’s traditional Prime Minister, during an extraordinary meeting he had with local princes, princesses, Amakhosi and mayors.

The meeting took place shortly after the king’s body arrived in Nongoma in preparation for burial.

Buthelezi, who was also the king’s cousin, began the meeting outside the KwaKhethomthandayo palace by recounting the king’s last days while in hospital. He said the king was treated by 20 doctors and died of Covid-19.

Buthelezi also revealed that he almost abandoned his traditional role to bury the king after encountering fierce opposition within the royal house.

He said he was surprised when he heard a prince tell a news broadcaster that the king’s body would be in the state even though they have confirmation from a doctor that he died of Covid-19.

He linked that decision to a brewing rebellion in which some princes wanted to be put aside. As a result, he said he planned to withdraw from the historic process, but changed his mind after speaking with Police Minister Bheki Cele and Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

“You all know that large families always have fights. Despite the prior agreement that since the king died of Covid-19. I heard that some family members wanted that to be completely ignored. They wanted his body to be taken to Nyokeni (palace), taken to KwaDlamahlahla, taken to Linduzulu and lastly here at home (KwaKhethomthandayo). I do this job, even in difficult times.

“I called the ministers Cele and Mkhize and asked them to prevent this from happening (the public from the body and taking it to the palaces). I also called Prince Qedi, I called the Prince of Ezibindini and told them that I would no longer come here if they took the king’s body to all these palaces without my knowledge. Mkhize asked me to stop, but as you see me, I almost retired because I have already made up my mind. Fortunately, Mkhize avoided this. Even I don’t know what they are doing with the body, ”said Buthelezi, who used to shed tears while addressing the meeting.

He also revealed that, at some point, the tension of the royalty threatened the life of the king and they once rejoiced that there was a sequel between him and the king.

“A prince told me that once some princes joined forces against the king and accused him of not taking care of them, but of taking care of Gatsha. The king got angry and asked what they were doing for him so that he would take care of them, ”he recalled.

As if that wasn’t enough, Buthelezi revealed the past tensions between him and the late king. He said that while they had their consequences, he had forgiven the king and that the reason he was speaking was that he did not want to die with a grudge and wanted the king to leave in peace. He said at the meeting that he was injured because in 2017 the late King said at a birthday celebration that while he was in power, he did nothing to protect him.

“I broached that subject within the royal house and am happy to broach it. I do not know what I have done to them (princes) because I am their blood relative, I do not know what I have done to them. I heard that even on the day he said this, some of you who were present rejoiced and said that the King had attacked him. The prince of the Royal House Ezibindini even asked what he had done to be beaten like that, ”he said.

Despite all these challenges, Buthelezi held a meeting with royalty to set a date for the king’s burial and other pertinent matters.
