Durban – Durban – A woman believed to be a close relative of self-proclaimed fugitive prophet Shepherd Bushiri has paid a guilty plea fine after it was discovered that she had been in South Africa illegally.
Esther Bushiri, who is believed to be Bushiri’s younger sister, appeared in Midrand Magistrates Court on Thursday, where she had to pay a fine of R10,000 for admission of guilt.
TimesLive reported that the defendant was wearing a black hoodie with the words “Jesus Power” stamped on it. The report went on to say that, according to court documents, “the accused is guilty of contravening a provision of article 41 (1) … in which the accused, as a foreigner, illegally and intentionally, contrary to the provisions of article 9 of the Act 13 of 2002, he entered the Republic of South Africa on a date unknown to the state and in a place unknown to the state. “
Meanwhile, it is unclear when Bushiri and his wife Mary will return to South Africa to stand trial.
The couple face charges of theft, money laundering and fraud. They fled to their home country, Malawi, earlier this month.
The couple’s bail money in the money laundering case, amounting to R400,000 and their R5.5m mansion at Midstreams Estate, Centurion, was confiscated from the state after they escaped.
The property is expected to be auctioned.
Bushiri has also been charged with rape.
The Hawks confirmed this week that three more arrest warrants had been issued for the arrested Bushiri after the women filed their claims.
“Three more arrest warrants have been issued for fugitive Mr. Shepherd Bushiri who broke bail conditions and fled to Malawi several days ago along with his wife Mary Bushiri,” said Hawks spokesman Col. Katlego Mogale.
“The arrest warrants were issued on Friday, November 20, 2020. Bushiri was already facing charges of fraud and money laundering.
“At the time of his disappearance, Bushiri was still under investigation for three separate cases of rape reported by members of his church.
The Hawks have appealed to members of the public with information about the Bushiri escape to contact law enforcement anonymously via the My SAPS app or the Crime Stop hotline (0800 10111).
“Information can also be shared directly with the Hawks through their communications officer. The information received will be treated with strict confidentiality, ”said the Hawks.
