Pretoria – Cheers of excitement were heard outside Pretoria Magistrates Court early Wednesday when self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and three of his co-defendants were released on bail in court.

Magistrate Thandi Theledi, when granting the bond, emphasized that the defendants had to meet certain conditions, for which the State would be obliged to revoke the bond.

Theledi granted the church leader Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) a 200,000 rand bond, his wife Mary a 200,000 rand bond and the co-defendant Landiwe Ntlokwana Sindani a 100,000 rand bond.

Zethu Mudolo, the wife of the first defendant, Willah Mudolo, received a bail of 20,000 rand.

The husband’s legal representative indicated to the court that he would also request bail. The hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Theledi said that it should not be presumed that the defendants are not guilty and that bail is a means of ensuring that they attend trial.

He said Mudolo had no prior pending matters against him, that he had two minor children to care for, one of whom was a 9-month-old girl who was still breastfeeding and had a medical condition.

Defendants must report to the nearest police station on Mondays and Fridays between 6:00 and 18:00.

They are not allowed to apply for any travel documents, and Bushiri and his wife can only travel within the Gauteng and Northwest borders.

Theledi also stressed that they should not intimidate or interfere with state witnesses, directly or indirectly.

In addition, Theledi said that Bushiri and his wife were prohibited from preaching on the case, threatening the prosecution, investigating officers or any of the witnesses.

All defendants must return to court on Friday for Mudolo’s bail request.
