JOHANNESBURG – Police authorities are still gathering evidence to determine how controversial Pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary went to Malawi without their travel documents.
Leaders of the Encounter Church of Enlightened Christians returned to their home country in East Africa claiming to be seeking protection against threats to their lives in South Africa.
They face criminal charges of money laundering, theft and fraud involving approximately R102 million.
An arrest warrant has been issued and the combined R400,000 bond has been forfeited.
When the Bushiris were released on bail, they were required to hand over their passports to the police and ordered not to leave South Africa.
There are questions about how the couple managed if they did not have their passports.
The government has denied reports that the Bushiris were on board Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera’s fight following his working trip to South Africa last week.
Spokeswoman Phumla Williams said the couple now face more criminal charges: “You have violated the conditions of the bond. His travel documents are with the police. “
The South African government is under pressure to guarantee the extradition of the Bushiris.
Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi admitted Eyewitness news on Monday, that government was fighting to secure the country’s borders.
