The legal representative of one of the co-defendants of the self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri will have to go to great lengths to defend his client’s case to obtain bail.
Attorney JP Marais, representing Willah Mudolo, is scheduled to begin cross-examination of Investigative Officer Colonel Daniel Marais in Pretoria Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
This comes after Marais testified Monday how the Hawks had built a strong case against Mudolo.
Mudolo, his wife Zethu, Bushiri, his wife Mary and Landiwe Ntlokwane were arrested on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering involving around R100m related to an alleged investment plan.
All of the defendants, except Mudolo, are out on bail. While he had previously provisionally withdrawn his application for bail, the Zambian citizen, who authorities said was in the country illegally, decided to apply for bail last week.
While he argues that he will be released on bail, co-defendants Shepherd and Mary Bushiri face an extradition battle after they fled to Malawi just days after posting bail of 400,000 rand.
Malawi granted SA an extradition order for the Bushiris on Monday.
