Fugitive Shepperd Bushiri and his wife Mary have lost their R5.5m property in Centurion, Pretoria, after the couple violated their conditions of bail by leaving SA.

Judge Thandi Theledi asked to call the Bushiris three times in his hearing yesterday before issuing the ruling. The property was tied to the couple’s bail.

The Bushiri fled South Africa to their home country of Malawi last week while facing charges of theft, money laundering and fraud in connection with an alleged R100m. investment plan that fell apart.

They had been released on bail of 200,000 rand each earlier this month.

They confirmed his leak on Facebook Saturday morning. On Monday, the Pretoria Magistrates Court gave the Hawks a warrant for Bushiris. On Wednesday, the Hawks said the North Gauteng Superior Court in Pretoria also issued arrest warrants against the Bushiris, who faced charges of fraud and money laundering.

The Bushiris surrendered to the police in Malawi on Wednesday, but were unconditionally released from custody yesterday.

According to the Malawian newspaper The Nation Online, the couple appeared yesterday in court, where Magistrate Viva Nyimba said that the arrest of the Bushiris was illegal.

Nyimba reportedly ordered that Bushiri and his wife be released in the interests of justice. Nyimba regrets that the two have surrendered voluntarily to the police and there is no risk of not meeting their obligations.
