  • Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary have fled to Malawi, even though bail conditions prohibit them from traveling internationally.
  • It says that they will only return to South Africa once the South African government meets their five demands.
  • The self-proclaimed prophet and his wife will face trial in a R102 million fraud and money laundering case.

Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary have fled the country, even though the bail conditions expressly prohibit any form of international travel.

The self-proclaimed prophet insists he fled South Africa because his life is at risk, not because he is waited on the docks for a R102 million fraud and money laundering case.

In fact, he’s desperate to prove his innocence, Bushiri says, one more reason he has to stay alive in another country.

Bushiri spokesman Emphraim Nyondo confirmed that the couple had arrived in Malawi on Wednesday. He added that Bushiri’s attorneys would handle any impact the trip has on his bail.

After coming out on social media, Bushiri stated that he would face South African courts again only if these five demands are met:

  • Bushiri demands a security guarantee for himself and his wife Mary while they are in South Africa.
  • You want to be sure that your bond will not be revoked, even though you have breached most of the bond conditions. He says the revocation of his bond would not allow him access to his lawyers “all the time” and exposes him “to more security problems.”
  • Bushiri demands a complete change of guard in the case, including investigating officers, arresting officers, and prosecution. It appears that the only people who are allowed to remain on the case are his defense team and the judge.
  • Various complaints filed against state officials and attorneys, which must be withdrawn from the case, must be investigated and concluded before Bushiri considers pursuing the case.
  • And finally, Bushiri insists that “independent and professional prosecutors and investigators” must be appointed to ensure that “independent decisions” are made in the case.

Bushiri has asked the Malawi government to work out the details to make sure his demands are met, following his arrival in the country on Wednesday.

He also insists that the lawsuits are only so that he and his wife can prove this innocence.

“In this regard, I ask the Government of Malawi to contact the Government of South Africa to ensure that the above issues are resolved. Once these five issues are resolved and I have been assured of a fair, equitable and impartial trial, I am ready to take advantage of the South African judicial system myself. I am looking forward to that day because my wife and I have been waiting for a long time for me to prove our innocence and clarify our names, “he said.
