JOHANNESBURG – The request for bail for the self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri, his wife, Mary, and their co-defendants has been deferred until Friday by the Pretoria Magistrates Court.

The Bushiri and their three co-defendants were arrested last week and face charges, including fraud and money laundering involving R102 million.

The Bushiri and their co-defendants will spend another four nights at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Center in Pretoria.

This after his case was transferred to allow defendant number one to explain to the court why he should be granted bail.

The lawyer for defendant number two previously said that the state had no case against his client, saying that it would be in the interest of justice to release her as she had a child whom she was breastfeeding.

Earlier on Monday, attorney Anneline van den Heever tried to persuade the magistrate to postpone the matter until Tuesday, but the magistrate raised a number of concerns, saying the court list was full and she was only able to hear the matter on Friday.

“As with today, we are more than willing to come and sit and wait for our turn. I would suggest, praise, that it would be in the factual interest of justice that the matter be deferred until tomorrow.”

She also said she was concerned about a large group of people outside the court building where social distancing was not being respected.
