Amakhosi’s former coach was criticized for failing to establish an effective attack built around the Zimbabwean forward.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alois Bunjira feels that Kaizer Chiefs can be a formidable team if new coach Gavin Hunt manages to bring out the best in attacker Khama Billiat.
Hunt was named Kaizer Chiefs coach this week, replacing Ernst Middendorp, who did not win the league title despite leading the Premier Soccer League (PSL) standings for 28 games.
Some of the criticism leveled at Middendorp was not creating a fluid attacking machine between Billiat, Samir Nurkovic, Lebogang Manyama and Leonardo Castro.
Billiat finished last season with three goals and two assists in 25 games in all competitions, which are his lowest numbers during his time at PSL, where he arrived in 2010.
Bunjira feels Hunt’s appointment could be the solution to the Chiefs’ pitching woes and the former Bidvest Wits tactician could be ideal for Billiat’s game.
“I think the appointment of Gavin Hunt as Kaizer Chiefs coach is a great appointment. He is South African, knows the terrain and is a proven winner, ”said Bunjira. Objective.
“The South African fans have confidence in him. It has done well with both small and large sides. So no one can blame Kaizer Chiefs fans for feeling positive and excited about Gavin’s appointment. I’ve followed Gavin and one thing I know is that he’s good at recruiting players who understand the way he wants the game to be played.
“So as long as the Kaizer Chiefs bosses are flexible and take advantage of the players that Gavin wants, I’m sure we will see a more competitive Kaizer Chiefs team in the new season.
“Let’s be honest guys, the Chiefs could have easily won this past league championship. I don’t know how the wheels came out. But with Hunt in Chiefs, the Mamelodi Sundowns know they won’t see the Chiefs lose their wheels like they recently did.
“So for me, it’s not really about ending the dominance of the Sundowns, but seeing a Kaizer Chiefs able to go all the way and win the title, if both the management and the technical department come together and pull in the same direction.
“The sunsets will definitely get stronger too, so it won’t be easy. So for me, with Gavin in Chiefs now, the season promises to be fireworks. I don’t see Khama Billiat leaving the Chiefs next season. If Gavin can get Khama to play his best, the Chiefs may have the upper hand.
“Let’s see which players Gavin brings to Kaizer Chiefs to fight the battle alongside Khama. But yeah … if there’s any coach capable of undoing the Sundowns dominance, it has to be Gavin. He has done it before. However, don’t rule out SuperSport and Pirates. I believe that this next season we will witness a very tight season ”.
Billiat joined the Chiefs in 2018 and while he seemed to have improved form somewhat at the end of last season, he seemed frustrated for most of the season amid reports of a strained relationship with Middendorp.
