Having had to fight Covid himself, Bulls Rugby director Jake White said it had given him a fresh perspective ahead of his team’s crucial Currie Cup game against the resurgent Lions at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.
White named an extended team Monday for the game as certain players remained in doubt, but the Bulls boss was relieved to have recovered from the virus.
“I was laying in bed for a few days and I thought I needed perspective again on where I was,” White said.
“I was not with the team, so I had time to think. I spoke with the staff at all times and it was not too disturbing for me because we had already trained for three days and then we had three days off before Christmas before the deadline, “he added.
White recounted how she had experienced normal symptoms such as a sore throat, loss of smell, and a dry cough, accompanied by watery eyes, during her time in isolation.
“It was scary and losing some close friends, it made me realize he’s hitting closer to home,” White said.

However, less than three weeks from the end of the competition, the former Springbok coach remained optimistic about where his team was, despite the ongoing pandemic.
“We have 20 days left and then the Currie Cup champions will be crowned. We’ve beaten everyone,” White added.
“So we have four games left and if we play well we can make sure we play three of those at Loftus,” White said, dispelling any idea that they would be rusty after three weeks without playing.
White played down suggestions that the game was once in doubt against the Lions.
“There was uncertainty as to whether it was the new strain or the old one, so we re-tested some guys and that’s why I chose a bigger team,” White said.
“I’d like to see certain combinations, but we weren’t exactly sure who would be available, so we could see additions for Sunday’s game against the Pumas, having to play two games in a week,” he said.
