Cape Town – The Northern Cape District Attorney has been shocked by the brutal murder of Leon Brits, owner of the well-known Pofadder Hotel, on Wednesday following an alleged labor dispute, while Freedom Front Plus has called on the community to remain calm.
“We cannot continue to live in a society where people are tortured to death on a daily basis and nothing is done about it,” MP Veronica van Dyk, head of the Kamiesberg constituency, said in a statement.
Police spokesman Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said a murder and robbery case was opened after the body of the 40-year-old Briton was discovered by his wife Suretha, 30, in their undercover pool at 11:45 a.m. today .
His wife reportedly went looking for him after she was unable to reach him by phone. He had spent the night in Pofadder with his brother Tokkie, who had left early Wednesday morning for their home in Strandfontein.
Riaan Oberholzer, a friend of the family, was quoted on social media as saying, “It looks like he was stabbed with a knife multiple times and strangled with the dog chain.” It also appears that he was dragged and thrown into the pool. ”
The British couple live in Kakamas, about 140 km from Pofadder, during the week their three children go to school.
Freedom Front Plus said in a statement: “According to early reports, the incident is related to a labor dispute. The community has been asked to remain calm until it is clear what exactly happened.
“South Africa is currently in a very volatile situation as the temperature is rising due to several cruel killings.”
Van Dyk said: “Like the communities in the province and the country, the Office is fed up with the increasing levels of violent crime in South Africa and especially with the increasingly ruthless attacks against people residing in our rural areas.
” The levels of crime we are witnessing are simply unthinkable and inhumane. We cannot continue to live in a society where people are tortured to death on a daily basis and nothing is done about it.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa, government leaders and the police must come to the table now. They cannot allow this to continue.
” They must act or be seen as complicit in the ongoing massacre of people residing in peripheral areas.
” We need drastically improved policing to stop the killings. We need more police officers, more resources and more training from our police service. We need this today, not tomorrow or the next day because more lives will have been unnecessarily lost by then.
“We also need more perpetrators urgently arrested and convicted, because otherwise the cycle of crime and fear will simply continue unabated.
The killings must end today. People in rural areas also have the right to life and security, and those who have been the victims of ruthless criminals also deserve justice. ”
