- Sedibeng Mayor Busisiwe Modisakeng said the murder of city manager Stanely Khanyile had “left devastating pain” for the municipality.
- Khanyile was shot multiple times inside his vehicle on Saturday in Alberton.
- Attorney William Mokhari was to publish a report on the corruption allegations involving Khanyile and the conflicting municipality.
Sedibeng Mayor Busisiwe Modisakeng has expressed shock at the “brutal and inhuman” murder of city manager Stanley Khanyile.
“The brutal and inhumane murder of Mr. Khanyile has left devastating pain and sudden loss for the Sedibeng District Municipality family and its stakeholders,” Modisakeng said on Sunday.
“Your contribution will be greatly missed in the local government community.”
He served as the municipal manager of the Sedibeng district since June 2017.
Khanyile was shot multiple times inside his vehicle Saturday in Alberton, a source confirmed to News24.
Gauteng Police spokesman Brig. Mathapelo Peters said police had launched a manhunt for the unknown suspects. On Sunday, he still refused to identify the victim.
“According to information from the scene, around noon on Saturday, the deceased was in a vehicle parked in a shopping center at the corner of Hennie Alberts Road and Michelle Avenue in Meyersdal, Alberton, when a suspect shot him multiple times.” Peters said.
After shooting Khanyile, the suspect was reported to have jumped into a nearby gold Toyota Cressida.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
In August, Khanyile, Durban businessman and chartered accountant Poovandaren Chetty and former chief director of the Eastern Cape social development department, defender Vuyokazi Sangoni, appeared before the King William’s Town Magistrates Court, where they faced charges of fraud, theft and money laundering of more than 29 million rand.
It was alleged that the defendants diverted R29 million from a R42 million budget earmarked for the construction of a resource development center during the 2015-2016 fiscal year.
Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile announced in August that it appointed attorney William Mokhari to investigate a series of allegations against Khanyile and the conflicting municipality.
At the time, he said he named Mokhari after receiving statements from Modisakeng about certain allegations.
Mokhari’s tasks included investigating, making findings and reporting whether the city manager had bought a house worth R5 million by forging his wife’s signature and had salary payments that exceeded the amount for which the concurrence was received.
Maile spokesman Castro Ngobese said the MEC “would make the findings public once the report is finalized.”
He referred News24 to the city for further comment, although city spokesman Savior Kgaswane initially referred News24 to Ngobese.
No one had yet been arrested for the murder of Khanyile.
