The last time Manchester United faced Brighton, things were going great.
Mason Greenwood was improving in the second, the partnership of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba was getting stronger and they even looked solid on defense.
The 3-0 victory helped the Red Devils mount a late charge for the Champions League qualifying spots, which they secured on the final day of last season.
However, we are less than three months forward and the situation could not be more different at Old Trafford.
A loss to Crystal Palace last weekend has raised all kinds of questions about the direction Man United is going and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s credentials.
The United manager has faced an avalanche of criticism since last weekend, and a Carabao Cup win in Luton did little to convince skeptics that he is the one to lead the club forward.
However, the Norwegian will have to put all that behind him when United take on the Seagulls at Amex Stadium on Saturday, a game you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT, which begins at 12:30 pm.
Solskjaer himself was the first to admit that his players weren’t in it against Palace, but he insists the team is in much better shape for this match as it started a week later than most other teams.
He said in his pre-match press conference: “I was not happy with the game against Palace, we were not ready, we were not ready to play with the intensity that we needed. The races weren’t there.
“After the restart in June and July, we made great strides. Palace was very disappointing, but I’m still confident.
“We are a week ahead, it has been a good week, some players have been training well and the work in the training field has been good.”
Manchester United team news
Solskjaer may have dropped a hint that Eric Bailly will be in tomorrow, saying the center-back is in shape again after playing Luton.
Axel Tuanzebe should return after the international break, while Solskjaer added that there are no more fitness concerns on his team ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, with Phil Jones the only other known absentee.
The manager also didn’t rule out the possibility of Donny van de Beek, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes playing together, although Red Devils legend Bryan Robson doesn’t think it’s wise.
