BritBox, the British streaming service operated by BBC Studios and ITV, will launch in South Africa in the second half of this year.
The two companies announced that South Africa is the fifth region in the world to which the streaming service has expanded, after the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.
BritBox operates similarly to services like Netflix, charging customers a monthly subscription for an ad-free streaming service with a wide selection of content.
“Last year, BritBox announced a global deployment plan that would see the platform active in up to 25 new countries, providing audiences with an unrivaled collection of great British television shows and the best of British sets, drama premieres and live events, as well as new and exclusive original commissions, ”said the BBC and ITV.
BritBox first launched in North America in March 2017 and has since reached more than 1.5 million subscribers.
ITV Group’s director of distribution and strategic partnership, Martin Goswami, said that the launch of BritBox in South Africa is another step in the platform’s trajectory towards international expansion.
“We are delighted to take the service into whole new territory and continue to establish BritBox as a premium VOD brand around the world,” said Goswami.
BBC Studios President of Global Distribution Paul Dempsey highlighted South Africans’ affection for British television.
“We know that South African audiences have a real connection to British television and we can’t wait to bring them even more great shows, on demand, that we know they will love,” he said.
There is currently no official price or release date for the BritBox streaming service, but interested South Africans can sign up for notifications on the BritBox website.
In the UK, the service costs £ 5.99 per month, which works out to around R120 at the time of writing.
Content in South Africa

However, the BritBox website includes a preview of some of the shows that will likely be accessible on the streaming platform locally.
“BritBox will bring South Africans an unrivaled collection of British television, from beloved classics to top shows direct from the BBC and ITV,” the website states.
“Enjoy entire seasons of your favorites or discover something new to watch from thousands of hours of brilliant British dramas, comedies, documentaries, lifestyle shows and more.”
