JOHANNESBURG – The beer industry canceled sponsorship of all events in the wake of the rise in COVID-19 infections.

The South African Beer Association (Basa) said it was trying to avoid super spreader events.

“These are the events in which you would see the signage of one of our brands. And this is not just in light of what has happened recently in terms of Rabies in Durban. It’s about saying, ‘We don’t encourage high-profile meetings and events,’ ”said Patricia Pillay, Basa’s CEO.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to provide details of a wide range of new restrictions Monday night as the country battles a second wave of COVID-19.

Over the weekend, he met with Cabinet to discuss saving lives versus livelihoods.

The speech also comes after a meeting of the national command council and the presidential coordinating council.
Ramaphosa is understood to have also met with the ruling party’s alliance partners.

The time for the president’s speech is set for 8 pm.
