Pro-Trump protesters storm the Capitol building.
The United States Capitol was closed on Wednesday when crowds protesting President-elect Joe Biden’s victory broke through security barricades as Congress debated certifying its electoral victory over President Donald Trump, according to Reuters eyewitnesses.
The Senate and House, which were weighing objections to Biden’s victory, abruptly and unexpectedly withdrew.
CNN has reported that the police have fired tear gas at protesters. There have also been reports that Vice President Mike Pence was evacuated from the building.
Earlier in the day, Trump told supporters at a rally that he was not accepting Biden’s defeat, saying: “It is not awarded when there is a robbery involved.”
He also criticized Vice President Mike Pence after he refused to intervene in Congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory.
“Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution,” Trump tweeted. “America demands the truth!”
Trump’s statement came after Pence, defying the president, said he would not stop congressional certification of Biden’s victory.
Trump later tweeted after news of the protest that protesters must “stay in peace.”
Please support our Capitol Police and law enforcement. They really are on the side of our country. Keep in peace!

Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution, giving states the opportunity to certify a set of corrected facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones they were asked to pre-certify. America demands the truth!
