The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has sentenced Dumisani Mkhwanazi to 31 years in prison for killing Palesa Madiba, a student at the University of Johannesburg, on 12 August 2013.

Mkhwanazi was sentenced to 20 years for murder, three years for theft of a cell phone, eight years for overturning the purposes of justice, 10 years for possession of a firearm without a license, and two years for possession of ammunition. However, Judge Prince Manyathi ordered that the sentences be carried out at the same time.

Madiba’s relatives in the gallery screamed after Manyathi gave his sentence.

Madiba was killed after disappearing after a sleepover at her friend Tshidi Mkhwanazi’s home in Phiri, Soweto. Tshidi is the niece of Dumisani Mkhwanazi. He was found guilty of his murder on December 4 of last year.

Madiba’s body was discovered in the courtyard behind Tshidi’s home in December 2015 after a neighbor noticed an arm sticking out of a shallow grave, News24 previously reported.
