The ATM’s motion of no confidence to President Cyril Ramaphosa will be postponed.

This after the ATM submitted an application to the Western Cape Superior Court to review the decision of the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise, that the motion be voted by open ballot. The ATM insists that it must be done by secret ballot.

“In my opinion, the loyalty of the parliamentarian can best be achieved when his personal conscience is tested rather than when the parliamentarians act according to the mandate of their party,” ATM leader Vuyolwethu Zungula said in his affidavit.

Modise said that the ATM did not provide sufficient evidence of a toxic political atmosphere that required a secret ballot and that Parliament is constitutionally bound to conduct its activities outdoors. He also mentioned the logistics of hybrid virtual sessions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The parties agreed in chambers to postpone the matter to February 3 and 4 of next year. The MTA will ask Parliament to postpone the motion until the matter has been resolved.

ATM spokesman Sibusiso Mncwabe said the parties agreed that the motion will be postponed.

He said the request will be heard by a full bank.
