The acting director general of the State Security Agency (SSA), Loyiso Jafta, has been replaced as head of the spy agency.
News24 understands that the head of the National Intelligence Coordinating Committee (NICOC), Ambassador Gab Msimanga, has been appointed to serve for two months.
His replacement comes amid rumors that Jafta faces possible charges after clashes with Intelligence Minister Ayanda Dlodlo.
Dlodlo said Jafta undermined his authority by testifying before the Zondo commission last month after his attempt to prevent him from doing so.
The couple clashed again when Jafta authorized a subpoena from the National Tax Authority (NPA) Investigations Directorate to raid the SSA headquarters, Musanda. This led to a confrontation between the country’s top spies and investigators.
News24 understands that the removal of Jafta as head of the SSA was sanctioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
A process to appoint a permanent CEO is said to be under way.
