Maputo – Mozambique expelled a fugitive Brazilian cocaine smuggler after his arrest this week, a case that underscores the gang’s growing global reach of Brazil’s so-called First Capital Command (PCC), authorities said.

Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, also known as “Fuminho”, had been on the run for more than 20 years after escaping from a Brazilian prison until his capture at a luxury hotel in Maputo on Tuesday. He was one of the most wanted fugitives in Brazil, police said.

Mozambique’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that dos Santos had been expelled for having illegally entered the Southeast African country. Dos Santos was using a fake passport, Brazilian federal police said. “The expulsion order was given to the citizen and carried out by the national migration service,” said the statement from the Mozambique Interior Ministry.

Brazil’s Justice Minister Sergio Moro confirmed Dos Santos’ expulsion later Sunday in a Twitter post that included a photo of the Brazilian Air Force plane that returned him to Brazil. Moro said dos Santos would go to a federal prison, without specifying which one.

“A great blow against organized crime,” said Moro.

Originally formed as a prison gang in Sao Paulo, the PCC has spread throughout Brazil and is moving more and more cocaine abroad, especially to Europe and Africa, authorities said. Dos Santos was one of the gang’s top cocaine brokers, federal police said, and crucial to his international business.
