CAPE TOWN – Brackenfell High School’s governing body said it could not take responsibility for a private function that sparked a storm of racism.
In a statement, the governing body of the school (SGB) reiterated that it had nothing to do with the event and distanced itself from the racist comments made on social networks.
On Monday, a confrontation broke out between a group of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters and some members of the community, including parents of out-of-school students.
The EFF claims the show was for white people only.
The governing body stressed that it defends unity, respect, responsibility and citizenship, adding that the violence that erupted on Monday does not represent the values of the school.
The agency said the school’s priority was the best interest of its students and their right to sit for end-of-year exams.
Calm is requested.
Andre Gaum of the South African Human Rights Commission said they were investigating allegations that two teachers attended the private event, which is at the center of the saga.
The SGB said a former student had allegedly received threats after reporting racial profiling at Brackenfell High.
The school said it had already started processes to address concerns and facilitate diversity.
