South Africa will wake up without lights or power to start the day on Saturday as Eskom, which has been warning the country about a “restricted” system, will implement Stage 2 load shedding starting at 06:00.

The power company announced Friday night that the power outages will last until 11:00 p.m. and will be repeated on Sunday.

“Eskom regrets having to announce the implementation of phase 2 load shedding starting at 06:00 am … Load shedding will be repeated on Sunday as the system is severely restricted,” he wrote.

The power company said it needs to replenish depleted emergency power generation reserves for the next few weeks as the holidays approach.

Eskom has been warning about limited generation capacity, as unplanned outages exceeded 10,000MW. It had 7,452MW in planned maintenance, but another 10,208MW of capacity was depleted due to unplanned maintenance Friday night.

It said two generating units at its Kendal power plant were also shut down to comply with environmental legislation. Four more at Camden Power Station were shut down “to preserve the integrity of the ash dam facility.”
