ANC MP and former Minister of State Security Bongani Bongo arrived at the Nelspruit Police Station in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, where he will be formally charged with fraud and corruption.
Bongo is expected to appear in Nelspruit magistrates court on Wednesday along with 11 other suspects. Charged with conspiracy to defraud the human settlements department for an amount of R124m. Among the defendants are current and former law firm owners, businesses and former government officials.
Bongo was the department’s head of legal services at the time of the alleged crime and allegedly participated in the settlements that resulted in the government spending in excess of R54 million by purchasing three farms for the municipality’s development.
Hawks spokeswoman Philani Nkwalase confirmed Wednesday that 11 people would appear in court in connection with the land deals.
Outside the Nelspruit trial court, Mbombela businessmen, members of the ANC and government officials waited for the suspects to arrive in court. The accused are being held at the Nelspruit Police Station. Among the businessmen and ANC members who went to court in support of Bongo is the ANC deputy convener in Ehlanzeni, Ngrayi Ngwenya.
