CAPE TOWN – Rangers coach Steven Gerrard says Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu will significantly strengthen his team after signing the player at the transfer deadline.

The Rangers announced the signing of Zungu on loan until the end of the season, and the Light Blues have the option to make the deal permanent next June.

Midfielder Zungu, 27, came to the club from French Amiens. Zungu was first unveiled at Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Bongani fits the player profile that adds more strength and depth to our midfield. We made it clear that we wanted a player who improves our team and the starting XI. We think Bongani does this, ”Gerrard said on the Rangers website.

“We wanted a dominant midfielder with the right profile who can improve the team and complement the other players we have. We have been monitoring this situation throughout the summer and now we believe the time is right.

“Our board has been very supportive throughout the window with seven new signings. We believe that we have a team that will compete in all competitions, both at national and European level. This is a nice transfer for us and we look forward to Bongani joining the team. “

Zungu was delighted to join the Light Blues, adding: “I have studied the team and I feel like I can come in and bring my attributes to help the team improve. The opportunity to play for such a big club, especially in European competitions, is very exciting for me.

“I can’t wait to fly to Scotland and meet my new teammates. I know I will be moving to Glasgow and I am looking forward to getting started as soon as possible.

“I really want the fans to be proud of my performances and I will always give 100 percent for my new team.

“Rangers are a global club and I know there are already a lot of fans in Africa. I really want to play in front of a huge crowd and audiences from all over the world. “
