“While we were busy in court, I remembered what this is all about because I was employed in the department as Advisor, there’s nothing wrong the department has done. I think [former] HOD David Dube, acted above the board. I drew up the contracts and I think that as legal advisor nothing happened with the things they are talking about here, “said Bongo.

“They say my brother benefited from or worked with some of the subcontractors who were doing the work… I find these charges very disturbing, they are meant to discredit me. There are people who want to stain my name. said in Cape Town about this sequence of arrests and abuse of state resources, I think it continues ”.

However, he did not want to name the people who, according to him, are using state resources to “discredit” him.

Among those who appeared alongside Bongo were former head of the human settlements department Dube, Patrick Chirwa and Harriston Dlamini.

The court heard that Bongo and his brother face a schedule one offense. The charges are three counts of corruption and money laundering.

State Attorney adv Henry Nxumalo told the court that the Bongo brothers received three payments that were paid to a car dealer on their behalf.

“The defendants allegedly benefited indirectly from three transactions made by Nsingwane Attoneys with a car dealer. They are facing charges of money laundering and the state could add more charges to the defendants, ”Nxumalo said.

Nxumalo told the court that the modus operandi in crimes related to land transactions was that companies would buy the farms at a lower price and sell them to the provincial government at a higher price.

Nxumalo said that in one case in Ermelo, a company obtained a farm free of charge and sold it to the government using false statements.

He said the other defendants, who face the five-crime schedule, have to convince the court that they should receive bail.

Judge Suzan Monaledi gave Bongo and his brother bail of R10,000 each. His case was postponed until March 4, 2021 to allow for further police investigation.

The other defendants are Robert Burwise, Patrick Chirwa, Harrington Dhlamini, Little River Trading 156, represented by Burwise, Broad Market Trading 204, represented by Dhlamini, Mduduzi Singwane, David Boy Dube, Bongani Thomas Bongo, Vusi Willem Magagula, Bongani Sibiya , Bongiveli CC represented by Magagula, and Elmon Mdaka, Sibongile Mdaka, Pfuka Africa CC represented by Elmon Mdaka.
