The Boko Haram group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of hundreds of students in northwestern Nigeria, the AFP news agency reported.

More than 300 students are missing after gunmen on motorcycles stormed the Government Science School in Kankara late on Friday and engaged security forces in a fierce shooting, forcing hundreds of students to flee. and hide in the surrounding bushes and forests.

“I am Abubakar Shekau and our brothers are behind the kidnapping in Katsina,” the leader of the group behind the kidnapping of hundreds of school children in Chibok in 2014 said in a voicemail message on Tuesday.

Nigerian police, air force and military launched a joint rescue operation on Saturday, according to the government.

On Sunday, parents and family members gathered at the school and called on authorities to bring the missing children to safety.

“If it is not the government that will help us, we have no power to rescue our children,” Murja Mohammed, whose son was kidnapped, told the Reuters news agency.
