Referee Ian Tempest shows a direct red card to Harlequins center Andre Esterhuizen during the Premiership Rugby match between Gloucester and Harlequins at Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester on December 6, 2020.
Springbok Center Andre esterhuizen has received a four-week ban after receiving a red card playing for his English club Harlequins.
The incident occurred in Harlequins’ home away from Gloucester in Kingsholm over the weekend.
Esterhuizen, who has eight test matches, received his marching orders in the 45th minute of the contest after an official television match review (TMO) showed he had thrown an elbow in the face of Gloucester midfielder Lloyd Evans , who had to leave the field.
The 26-year-old appeared before an independent disciplinary panel online Tuesday night.
It was cited under Law 9.12: “A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Esterhuizen accepted the position and the independent panel consisting of Daniel White (chair), with Matthew Weaver and Mitch Read, gave him a four week suspension.
A six-week mid-range entry point was selected, but the ban was lowered by two weeks because Esterhuizen showed genuine remorse and apologized to Evans after the game.
