The body inside a hearse that caught fire Saturday morning in Paarl East was unharmed, the Drakenstein Township confirmed Sunday morning.

Spokeswoman Riana Geldenhuys had initially said in a statement that the fire on Saturday morning had significantly damaged the vehicle and also burned the body of the person inside.

In an updated statement Sunday, he said the undertaker had confirmed that the body had not been burned as previously reported.

She said:

While all indications were that the devastating fire that severely damaged a hearse and the casket it was carrying in Paarl East … also damaged the body in the casket, the undertaker has since confirmed to Drakenstein Township that this it was not the case.
