Christian Horner believes Ferrari’s downfall has underscored the fact that Red Bull was potentially stripped of victories in 2019.
Ferrari’s power unit emerged as the class act of the field last season until later FIA technical directives regarding fuel flow and oil burning put an abrupt end to its superiority.
A confidential settlement reached with the FIA over the winter after “a thorough technical investigation” only added fuel to the fire, even if no evidence of wrongdoing was discovered.
The result, however, has been the Scuderia’s shocking performance this season that reached its lowest point in Belgium, where the team achieved its worst result with two cars in a decade, as Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc could only place in positions 13 and 14.
“I think everything has left a bitter taste,” said team boss Horner, referring to the apparently clandestine agreement between Ferrari and the FIA.
“Obviously, you can draw your own conclusions from Ferrari’s current performance. But there are races that we should have won last year, possibly if they had raced with an engine that seems to be quite different from all the performance they had last year.”
For once, Horner agreed with Mercedes’ head of motorsport, Toto Wolff, who earlier in the weekend had questioned the decisions made by certain individuals within the Scuderia because of their recession.
“It’s obviously very difficult for them, but obviously their focus has been in the wrong areas in previous years, so they seem to be struggling a bit with whatever is in that deal,” Horner added.
Rating the four engine manufacturers this season, Horner concluded with a final twist of the knife when he said: “I think you have Mercedes as a clear leader.
“Then you have Honda and Renault who are reasonably close depending on the circuits and conditions.”
“So you have Ferrari, obviously, at the end of the queue.”
