There was good news for South African rugby on Wednesday with the confirmation that Friday night Super Rugby Unlocked clash between Lions Y Griquas Will continue.

SA Rugby and the Lions made the announcement Wednesday.

This follows last weekend’s clash between the Lions and the Cheetahs that was canceled in accordance with Covid-19 protocols after the Lions had a total of six players test positive for the coronavirus, while they were required to a total of 11 will be isolated after exposure.

Testing was conducted at the franchise on Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported that this weekend’s game will take place.

With only seven teams competing in a single round of matches to determine the Super Rugby Unlocked champions, each match matters, while the results also contribute to the overall Currie Cup record for 2020/21.

There were concerns that if more matches were canceled, the overall integrity of the tournament would be diluted.

It’s not yet clear which players the Lions won’t have available as a result of strict protocols in place, but coach Ivan van Rooyen will announce his squad later Wednesday.

Kickoff at Ellis Park on Friday is at 7:00 PM.
