Three vehicles, a cell phone jammer and firearms, including a rifle and two pistols, were seized and 11 suspects arrested last night in Bryanston following a robbery and shooting.
Police received intelligence on a planned robbery at an apparent diamond trading business and launched a sting operation.
The South African Police Service (Saps) confirmed in a statement that two members of the Saps were among those arrested.
The heavily armed robbers were initially said to have barricaded themselves in a business park on Culross Road after being rounded up by police and security.
“A multidisciplinary team in the province of Gauteng composed of members of the National Crime Intelligence, Provincial Specific Crimes, Loyalty Specific Services, CAP Security Services, Johannesburg Flying Squad, K9 Unit, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police, Response Team Tactic and Special Task Force. regarding a planned commercial robbery at a Bryanston diamond store while observing away from the target location from noon, ”Saps explained in a statement.

Police added that around 8:30 p.m. the team identified three vehicles heading towards the target business, one of them a marked police bakkie.

The suspects got out of the vehicles and the police approached them, and the suspects participated in a shootout with the police.
Members of Saps responded to the fire and subsequently arrested the suspects, two of them with gunshot wounds to the legs.
None of Saps’ team members were injured and three of the police vehicles were riddled with bullet holes.
The suspects will appear in Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, facing the following charges of conspiracy to commit theft, attempted murder, possession of firearms and ammunition without a license, possession of suspected stolen vehicles and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
Additionally, the arrested police officers, a detective sergeant stationed at Kempton Park and a Springs FCS clerk will also be subject to a departmental disciplinary investigation.
All unlicensed firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if they were used to commit other crimes.
