South Africa’s new National List of High Demand Occupations (OIHD) revealed that there is a shortage of numerous ICT skills in South Africa.

Higher education minister Blade Nzimande said the list is updated every two years and helps the country understand the needs of the labor market.

It gives a good indication of which occupations are likely to have openings and to grow due to new investment, especially from the government.

He added that this list can orient students and graduates towards the fields where they have the best employment prospects.

There are currently 345 occupations that are in high demand in South Africa out of 1,500 recorded in the Occupations Organizational Framework.

Nzimande said these include careers in the digital economy, such as data scientists, web developers, and computer network technicians.

You have urged universities, colleges, and private education and training institutions to use the list to inform their selection of program offerings, resource allocations, and enrollment planning processes.

He said it will also help identify and develop new qualifications and programs that better respond to the needs of the economy and society.
