CAPE TOWN – Cricket South Africa bowed to the national government’s ultimatum with a slew of Board members, including Acting Chairman Beresford Williams, presenting their resignations Sunday morning.
Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa had given CSA a deadline to formulate a new interim governance structure before Tuesday if they wanted to avoid government intervention.
Williams, along with Donovan May of Eastern Province, John Mogodi of Limpopo Cricket, Tebogo Siko of Northerns Cricket Union and Angelo Carolissen of Boland, have also submitted their resignations effective immediately.
However, Siko and Mogadi will remain on the Membership Council.
Williams said he remains “deeply passionate about cricket and because of his love for the game he has resigned as this is the best way he can serve cricket today”, while Carolissen states that “these challenges have made great demands. in his career outside of cricket and that it is in the best interest of him and CSA to resign from the Board ”.
Zola Thamae from Free State is the last remaining non-independent director on the Board.
Independent director Dheven Dharmalingam, who sent a letter to CSA company secretary Welsh Gwaza on Thursday night stating that he too would resign if requested by the Members Council “in the interest of cricket”, has also resigned. .
“I am committed to working with the Board, the Council of Members and the administration, should they need it. Despite the tough times, it was a pleasure working with everyone. I wish and hope that CSA finds peace in the coming months and that cricket takes center stage, ”said Dharmalingam.
The plan going forward will be for the remaining independent members of the board, a representative appointed by Minister Mthethwa, one by Sascoc and one by the International Cricket Council (ICC), and a former national cricketer pending approval by the South African Cricket Players Association (Saca) will constitute the new interim board.
