CAPE TOWN – Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga calls on parents to send their children back to school.
Motshekga said that while the number of students was gradually increasing, she was concerned that there were still students who had not yet returned to school.
“Schools report an attendance rate of between 80% and 90%, which means that there is a good element of students who have not returned to schools.”
Reporting to the media on Thursday, he said that the National Higher Certificate Exam would take place in November and conclude on December 15.
Motshekga said the late start of the exam was intended to allow as much time as possible to cover the critical content of the curriculum.
“Our exam section is putting everything in place to ensure it remains credible and safe and efficient. All exam centers, both public and independent, have been audited in preparation for the 2020 combined exams and have been implemented protocols for COVID-19 instead.
The minister added that her department was working 100% again.
“Since the country migrated to level 1, our own Department of Basic Education has all its programs now in full operation, so we are providing all the services that are in our scope of work.”
