Bail for Durban Metro Police Allegedly Demanding Bribes from Persons Accused of Covid-19 Violations

Two Durban Metro Police officers accused of demanding bribes from people accused of Covid-19 “violations” were granted bail, according to police.

Metro police officers, Agent Jerome Govender, 33, and Agent Themba Mbhele, 34, appeared in Chatsworth Magistrates Court on Thursday for corruption and were granted bail of 1,500 rand each. .

Police spokesman Capt. Nqobile Gwala said the case was postponed until January 13.

“It is alleged that on September 19, 2020, the defendants were on duty at Chatsworth when they arrested three men and requested money, stating that [had] violated Covid-19 regulations.

“They demanded an amount ranging from R500 to R1,000, and those who did not pay were placed in the back of the truck until the money was paid.”

He said the matter was reported to the Chatsworth police and a corruption case was opened for investigation.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the arrest: “This arrest shows that no one is above the law,” he said.
