South Africa midfielder Bongani zungu joined the Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers on loan for a season from French club Amiens on Monday.

The Rangers have the option of making the 27-year-old’s signature permanent at the end of this season.

Zungu has played 29 times for Bafana Bafana and impressed at last year’s African Cup of Nations.

“Bongani fits the player profile that adds more strength and depth to our midfield. We made it clear that we wanted a player who improves our team and the starting eleven. We believe Bongani does this,” said the Rangers coach, Steven Gerrard.

“We wanted a dominant midfielder with the right profile who can improve the team and congratulate other players that we have. We have been monitoring this situation throughout the summer and now we feel the time is right.

“It is a pleasant transfer for us and we look forward to Bongani joining the team.”

Now Liverpool fan Zungu hopes to learn from his childhood Anfield hero Gerrard.

“I have studied the team and I feel that I can come in and contribute my attributes to help the team improve,” Zungu said.

“The opportunity to play for such a big club, especially in European competitions, is very exciting for me.

“I can’t wait to fly to Scotland and meet my new teammates. I know I’ll be settling in Glasgow and can’t wait to get started as soon as possible.”

“Rangers are a global club and I know there are already a lot of supporters in Africa. I’m looking forward to playing in front of a huge crowd and audience from around the world.”
