JOHANNESBURG – A newborn has been given a second chance at life.

His life almost ends only a few hours after his birth.

The baby was found in a well bath in Mafakathini on Saturday.

“Taylor’s Halt police officers were alerted after community members heard the cries of a newborn baby emanating from a pit latrine,” said SAPS spokesman Jay Naicker.

“The police search and rescue unit responded and helped the community rescue the boy from the pit latrine.”

It is suspected that the mother of the 16-year-old boy may have tried to leave the baby.

The mother and baby were transported to Northdale Hospital, where they are reportedly recovering well.

“Police officers opened a concealment of birth case at Taylor’s Halt police station and turned over the file to the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sex Crimes Unit, which are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Naicker said.

The baby’s relatives weren’t ready to comment yet.
