Seven defendants in the R255 million asbestos corruption case appeared in Bloemfontein High Court on Friday. Among the top business and government officials arrested by the Hawks are Edwin Sodi, former Mangaung mayor Sarah ‘Olly’ Mlamleli, and the head of the Free State human settlements department, Nthimotse Mokhesi. Former Msunduzi City Manager Thabane Zulu was arrested Wednesday. In the same week, Durban businessman Thoshan Panday and his co-defendant, KwaZulu-Natal SA Police Service Colonel Navin Madhoe, appeared in Durban Magistrate Court on Friday. Panday and Madhoe were released on bail of R100,000 and R10,000, respectively.

As the Hawks and other law enforcement agencies continue to target the alleged beneficiaries of corruption and surround the bigwigs of politics, there is a growing backlash in the ANC against what some believe is a campaign aimed at influence the balance of power ahead of next year’s crucial conferences and in 2022.
City Press learned that among those targeted by the Hawks and the National Tax Authority (NPA) are a senior ANC leader, a former cabinet minister, and various officials and businessmen.
