CAPE TOWN – The African Transformation Movement (ATM) said Thursday it was confident of receiving support from other opposition parties ahead of a vote of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ATM, which only has two seats in the 400-member National Assembly, believed the motion would succeed because South Africans have grown weary from the president’s inaction.

President Thandi Modise greenlit the debate during a parliamentary programming meeting on Thursday.

The motion was filed by the ATM in February after growing concerns about volatility at state-owned companies, high unemployment rates and the growing economic crisis.

However, the matter was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will be the first time MPs have debated Ramaphosa’s suitability for office.

Sibusio Mnewabe, from the ATM, said: “You will remember the moment when SAA collapsed, there was a lot of load loss and there was unemployment. So we included a lot in our motion before this looting of COVID-19 R500 billion came along. “

However, he was concerned that deputies would not be able to cast their votes in secret because some were connecting remotely.

“Parliament is always in hybrid mode, which means that some MPs are there and others are at home. We are very clear as a party that we want a secret vote. We’re still not sure how that particular process will be handled. “
