CAPE TOWN – Police say they arrested at least 18 people during a protest outside Parliament on Saturday.
Two groups were protesting, one against gender-based violence and the other against murders on farms.
According to the police, hundreds of people participated in the demonstrations.
Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said police were investigating cases of public violence, malicious damage to property, violations related to the Disaster Management Act, and attempted murder.
Democratic Alliance MP Lindy Wilson said she was supposed to compile a memo from the Anti-Farm Murders group, but was unable to do so due to chaos.
“It was a peaceful protest, as I went up to collect the memos. The police had a fight with a couple of motorcyclists and the situation was a bit unpleasant. The police started using stun guns. “
Motorcyclists and protesters lined the streets with signs reading “Enough is enough” and “If I’m next, drop me off in front of Parliament.”
Benjé Vermaak of the advocacy group South African Women Fight Back said police also used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
“I am very sad. We are trying to come together and make a change in this country. I can’t believe they’re treating us like this. “
