Arsenal’s 3-0 home loss to Liverpool felt like a setback.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was throwing brilliant crosses, Fabinho and Thiago were dominating the midfield.
And the Gunners were back in crisis mode.
Mikel Arteta now has a worse record than Unai Emery after 50 games in charge and has apologized to the fans for his team’s display.
“We completely deserved to lose the game,” he told Sky Sports.
They were better in every department and deserved to win the game with whatever margin they had, or even more. I accept responsibility for the way we play today.
“Liverpool totally deserved to win the game, probably by a larger margin. We were extremely poor. We apologize.”
The Spaniard was visibly regretful after the full-time whistle, a stark contrast to his rival number Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp was delighted and understandably. His side looked like a different team after the international break and he hopes they have stopped the rot after their previous streak of six losses in eight league games.
The Reds coach hugged his players on the field, highlighting Alexander-Arnold in particular.
First, however, he was seen chatting with Martin Odegaard.
The pair were undoubtedly discussing the game itself, but as the Real Madrid loan had been linked to Liverpool in the past, it was enough for some Arsenal fans to fall apart.
Odegaard has been a revelation in his temporary stint in the Emirates and many fans would love to sign him permanently.
You never go down well when you see a losing player chatting jovially with the opposition coach after a loss, in any case.
Arsenal fans react
Take a look at some of the reactions:
The midfielder would be a perfect fit for Liverpool, especially Gini Wijnaldum who is expected to move this summer.
Of course, we are all getting a lot ahead of ourselves here and Arsenal fans can enjoy watching the Norwegian for a few more months at least.
In truth, they probably also have bigger concerns after an abject display against the champs.
